Rule of Thirds guides you toward capturing the best photo

It’s not my rule, but I’ve heard it a hundred times since I first picked up a camera. If you haven’t heard about using this rule to capture the “true essence” of the photo, you can find out more from digital photography pro, Darren Rowse.  I was looking through his blog, Digital Photography School, and ran across this post which I’d like to share with you. Just might help you snap better pictures!

rule-of-thirdsPerhaps the most well know principle of photographic composition is the ‘Rule of Thirds‘.

The “Rule of Thirds” one of the first things that budding digital photographers learn about in classes on photography and rightly so as it is the basis for well balanced and interesting shots.

I will say right up front however that rules are meant to be broken and ignoring this one doesn’t mean your images are necessarily unbalanced or uninteresting. However a wise person once told me that if you intend to break a rule you should always learn it first to make sure your breaking of it is all the more effective!

What is the Rule of Thirds?

The basic principle behind the rule of thirds is to imagine breaking an image down into thirds (both horizontally and vertically) so that you have 9 parts. As follows.

Are you a family photo pack rat?

  • Do you take tons of family photos — capturing cute moments, special occasions, vacation trips, school activities and the kids’ dance recitals or soccer games?
  • Are most of those photos still on your camera?
  • Have you put them on your computer, photo CDs or DVDs?
  • Do you get them printed, share a few and then stash the rest in a drawer or box?

Ask yourself:

  1. Why are you saving them?
  2. Who will ever look at them again?
  3. Did you really want to preserve those photo moments for your family? continue reading

Getting Last Pix for Photo Book

The last couple of cruise days flew by so quickly. We stopped in Juneau for a dayVictoria, B.C. — it’s a city with a good bit of Alaskan charm. Took some photos there that will tell the story in my cruise memory book. Then on to Victoria, British Columbia for a delightful day in this beautiful city with a distinct British flavor. Then back to Seattle. Then home.

Follow along as I discuss how to sort photos in preparation for creating a trip memory book. continue reading
